TITLE-"Should Young Adult Fiction Have Age Ratings?"
AUTHOR- Husna Haq

In this article "Should Young Adult Fiction Have Age Ratings," by Husna Haq readers are informed about a on going debate between 2 best selling authors. Authors, Patrick Ness and G.P. Taylor argue over whether or not an age ranging system should be put on Y/A books. Patrick argues that there shouldn't be while Taylor argues there should be.

To begin with, the main idea of the article is do you agree with Patrick or Taylor. We can tell this is the main idea because the way Haq structures the article makes us reader choose a side. She starts the article by stating '-G.P Taylor and Patrick Ness sparred on BBC breakfast over Taylor's proposal to establish an age-ranging system for childern lit..." this introduces the topic that is going to be discussed through out the article. Haq starts off by saying this to put the readers in a specific mind set.

In addition, Haq formats the different arguments by put the authors' arguments in different areas of the article.
Haq uses Taylor's argument throughout the middle of the article but then she ends with Patrick's argument. I feel she positions her article this way to clarify what both authors are feuding for. She neatly organizes the authors' quarrels to makes us readers think about which author we can relate or agree with.

Furthermore, after reading this article I agree with Patrick that an age rating system should not be put on Y/A books. According to the article, Patrick says "-they (young adults) know what they read and they know what they want to read and if you don't give it to them, they'll find it somehow," I agree with him because from personal experience I know that teens are rebellious (most of them) and if they are restricted from something it makes them more curious about that something. So if we do have an age rating system, it won't be necessary because it won't work, teens will read or learn about those "topics" anyways.

  2. After reading this post I can see why books shouldn't have age ratings. There is also good quotes from the article and reasons why the author believes in his opinion. You also have good reasons why you agree with the author.
